Moving is undoubtedly stressful, so imagine how more anxious it can make your furry friends. Your pets can easily get stressed out with the chaos of boxes, with lots of movers lurking around, and your house is in just an upheaval. With that, it is your best interest to look after your pets throughout the moving proper. Here are some helpful tips to make them feel comfortable in the process!
1. Remove Your Pets Away From The Action
During the actual move, the best way to eliminate stress on your pets is to let them stay in the quietest and most peaceful area possible. If you can’t leave them with a colleague or a kennel for the actual day, try your best to keep them away from the action. Look for an empty room upstairs and close the door or put them in their carrier and let them stay in the garage. Just make sure to check them regularly, feed, and walk as you normally would.
2. Ready Your Overnight Kit
Make an easy to access overnight kit that contains all your pet necessities such as an ample amount of dog food, toys, kitty litter, and grooming tools to keep your furry friends comfortable through the moving process.
3. Take Your Pet In Your Vehicle
Do your best to transport your pet to your new house using your own vehicle and let's your chosen moving company, take care of your belongings. Small dogs and cats can be placed on a carrier in the backseat and then be fastened with a seatbelt. If you have a bigger dog, get a kennel, and put your pet at the back of the car. To make them feel comfortable, you can cover their carrier or enclosure with a blanket during the trip so they won’t see the changing ambiance outside.
4. Contact Your Vet
Before moving out of your old location, make to reach out with your vet, and take all essential records and necessary medications with you. If possible, try to ask if they can recommend another vet in the area you are moving in.
5. Update Your Address
Remember to get new identification tags for your pets, showing your new address and phone number. If your pet has a microchip, don’t forget to change your contact information in the database.
